In an article published in the Vancouver Sun, January 29th, titled “Gender Equity: Doing the Math”, a study indicates that boys do not lose out when girls start to do better in math. In fact, when girls do better in society, both sexes benefit.

The study examined more than half a million fourth and eighth graders from 86 different countries. “It found essentially no gender differences between girls and boys in math performance.” In fact this study found that the “more equal the societies were around gender, the better everybody did in math.”

The study concluded that, “gender equity and other sociocultural factors. . . are the primary determinants of mathematics performance at all levels for both boys and girls.”

Abstract: “Individual assistant professors (a total of 2966 faculty) hired in science and engineering since 1990 at 14 United States universities were tracked from time of hire to time of departure by using publicly available catalogs and bulletins. Results of survival analysis showed that the chance that any given faculty member will be retained over time is less than 50%; the median time to departure is 10.9 years. Of all those who enter as assistant professors, 64.2% were promoted to associate professor at the same institution. Overall, men and women are retained and promoted at the same rate. In mathematics, however, faculty leave significantly earlier than other disciplines, and women leave significantly sooner than men, 4.45 years compared with 7.33 years.”

“America’s Next Top Engineer: She Needs Your Role Models”, is an article written by Dr. Linda Kekelis, Executive Director at Techbridge. Techbridge is a nonprofit organization based in Oakland, California, whose mission is to promote girls’ interest and skills in science, technology, and engineering. Techbridge does this through the programs they run and by developing resources for others – teachers, role models, families, and partners like the Girl Scouts. They have served over 10,000 girls in after-school and summer programs in the San Francisco Bay Area and nationally through partnerships with Girl Scouts.

This article, written for the Harvard Business Review, is about inspiring and encouraging the younger generation by being a role model – showing that as a scientist or engineer you can make the world a better place – an aspiration for many girls.

Date: Monday, March 12th, 2012

Time: 5:30-8:00 pm

Location: Cecil Green Park House, UBC

What is WISE?

WISE 2012 is a networking event that aims to offer female science and engineering undergraduate students the opportunity to meet and network with women from diverse science and engineering fields in an intimate setting, conducive to meaningful small-group discussions.

The goal of the event is for female students to walk away from the event having formed potential student-mentor relationships, and for mentors in turn to feel that they have made a difference in the lives of female science and engineering students at UBC.

The Role of Mentors

Your role in the event will involve participating in small group discussions with rotating groups of approximately six female science and engineering students. At the end of the conference, there will be an opportunity to mix and mingle with the students and mentors. Light refreshments will be served throughout the evening, and a parking pass will be provided for each mentor.

Common Questions Students Ask Mentors

The female students attending range from still exploring the countless career paths open to them to having decided on a career path and would like to connect with mentors within their chosen field. Common questions include:

1. What were some obstacles you faced along your career path?

2. What were some sources of support you received along the way?

3. What advice would you give to students considering a career path similar to yours?

4. How have you been able to balance your career with your personal life?

RSVP

If you, or someone you know would be interested in attending this event and accepting our invitation to be a mentor, please RSVP to ubcwise@gmail.com, addressed to Nasim Arianpoo.

The WISE Committee thanks you for your consideration and we look forward to hearing from you. For more information on the event, please visit www.ubcwise.com.
