This Article by Charlene Sayo highlights the Creating Connections conference.

“So why are women scientists AWOL when their smarts are greatly needed? Blame it on society’s increasingly suffocating great expectations against women, who, despite their academic scientific innovations — especially in environmental and biological research — multiple PhD’s, and numerous honorary degrees, women are still burdened to have it all, as elucidated by corporate feminism’s latest mascot, Sheryl Sandberg and her book, Lean In. These are expectations that men, in whatever field, rarely have to wrestle with. David Suzuki has never had to justify his travels over his family in the name of nature, and Neil de Grasse Tyson’s family is an extension of his public image as he incorporates them in many of his animated lectures. Bill Nye? Is he married or a bachelor for life?

When men take up endeavours, especially ones that involve new discoveries, it’s a heroic adventure. Take a woman away from the home and civilization falls apart.”

Transforming Human-Robot Interaction – Dr. Elizabeth Croft

Depictions of robots vary from the helpful humanoid to destructive, evil entities. In reality, most robots are used in lab or industrial settings. These robots are fast, strong and accurate, but not ideal co-workers. They don’t communicate well with humans, and are not always designed for safety when in close proximity to people. Dr. Croft is finding ways to help humans and robots to work together.

Dr. Elizabeth Croft, B.A.Sc. (88, Mech, UBC), M.A.Sc (92, Mech, Waterloo), Ph.D. (95, Mech, Toronto), PEng, FEC, FASME

Dr. Croft is a professor at UBC; NSERC Chair for Women in Science and Engineering, BC-Yukon at UBC; and leader of the WWEST program for women in engineering, science and technology. The focus of this initiative is to promote science and engineering as a career choice for women and other under-represented groups, and to identify and eliminate barriers that result in attrition from these career paths. She is the founding faculty advisor for the UBC Engineering Tri-Mentoring Program, and is director of the Collaborative Advanced Robotics and Intelligent Systems Laboratory at UBC.

CanWIT is pleased to announce that it will host its AGM at the upcoming i-CANADA Summit in Toronto. The SUMMIT is organized by i-CANADA, the only movement in Canada dedicated solely to the creation of an Intelligent Nation. It is a not-for-profit organization supported by sponsors and backed by Canada’s largest High Technology Organization: the Canadian Advanced Technology Alliance (CATA).

CanWIT invites all members to attend both the AGM (at no cost) and the i-CANADA Summit at a discounted rate of $350.00 for the full two-day conference in Toronto. CanWIT is also hosting an interactive Women in Leadership Roundtable on June 4th.

Women in Leadership Roundtable – Finding Strength in Numbers for Women in Technology
Increasing the number of women in Canada’s tech sector is key to the success of Canada’s knowledge economy

90% of Canada’s economy and population are now overseen by women leaders; what will this significant change and others mean to the consultative process? How can we place this conversation within the context of Canada’s tech sector where the number of women working within it remains low (24%)?

Join the City of Waterloo’s Mayor, Brenda Halloran, and members of CanWIT’s National Advisory Council as they host this important roundtable discussion!
