Mar 1: Tour of TRIUMF

Visit one of the world’s leading subatomic physics laboratories, right here, in Vancouver!
At TRIUMF, Canada’s national laboratory for particle and nuclear physics, international teams work on research projects in molecular and material science, nuclear medicine, particle physics, and rare-isotope beam science.

When:  March 1, 10:30 – 1:30 pm
Where:  TRIUMF, 4004 Wesbrook Mall, Vancouver (UBC Wesbrook Village)
Cost:  Free – please register here.  The minimum age is 12 years.

Find out how a single atom can get accelerated to 3/4 of the speed of light in 0.3 ms, and how TRIUMF’s research is affecting the life of Canadians.

You will meet Dr. Lia Merminga, a world renowned researcher in advanced accelerator physics, Head of the Accelerator Division, and awardee of the Women In™ Science Award 2013 by the Minerva Foundation for BC Women.

Dr. Merminga has been working in the field of advanced accelerator physics for more than 20 years at leading research institutions in North America. Her exceptional contributions to the physics enterprise have been honored by her (mostly male) peers with a Fellowship in the American Physical Society.

Since 2008, Dr. Merminga has led the accelerator program at TRIUMF, filling one of the most senior scientific positions in Canada. She is also a Professor of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Victoria, and she has been an inspiration and mentor to many young scientists throughout her career.

She says: “Young girls ought to realize that if they love science and math, they should not feel limited by anything. They should just follow what they like to do with focus and determination.”

This event is promoted by SCWIST in alliance with msInfinity and DAWEG.
