Past Events – 2014

CAGIS Earthquake Engineering Workshop

Twenty girls and their parents enjoyed learning about earthquakes with Dr. Sheryl Staub-French and volunteers from UBC Civil Engineering.

APEGBC & UBC Salary Seminar/Industry Night

Dr. Elizabeth Croft co-presented the salary seminar and talked with students about the career paths available to them.

UBC Engineering Mentoring Program – Industry Networking Panel & Mixer

Dr. Sheryl Staub-French hosted this event held at the Vancouver Central Library.

 

Past Events – 2013

National Conference on Women in Engineering 2013

Dr. Elizabeth Croft was the diversity keynote speaker at this conference in November 2013.  WWEST also presented workshops on “Diversity in the Workplace” and “Forming the Community – Running a WiE Group”.

Creating Connections 3.0

Hosted at the University of British Columbia, and organised by WWEST, Creating Connections took place from May 10-11, 2013. Highlights included keynote speeches from Dr. Roberta Bondar, Anna Tudela (Vice-President of Regulatory Affairs and Corporate Secretary, Goldcorp Inc.). and Dr. Amiee Chan (CEO, Norsat). UBC Engineering Student Services’ Lunch for High School Girls

WWEST co-hosted an event for 90 female high school students, including a panel, lunch, and hands-on design activity.

Richmond School District’s “Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day” – Keynote Speaker

Dr. Croft was the keynote speaker at this conference in April 2013.

HR McMillan Space Centre Women in Science Series Speech

Dr. Croft delivered a speech on Transforming Human-Robot Interaction, and how robots and humans can work together in this public speaker series.

Summer Lab Tours

The CARIS lab hosted weekly lab tours in July for youth in the Geering Up! and Teck Trek science and technology camps.

 

Past Events – 2012

Women in Scholarship, Engineering, Science and Technology Annual Gala Lecture – University of Alberta

Dr. Croft was recognized with the WISEST Lectureship at the University of Alberta in November 2012.

Presentation on Diversity in Organizations at APEGBC AGM

WWEST was invited to present on Diversity in Organizations at the APEGBC Annual General Meeting in Victoria, BC on October 25th, 2012.

Dr. Elizabeth Croft and WWEST Manager Jennifer Pelletier presented three sessions, including the “Benefits of Diversity in Your Organization,” and “Building Leadership Diversity” sessions tailored specifically for managers and women engineers. They discussed material from both WWEST and WinSETT Centre, including WinSETT’s “Increasing Women in SETT: The Business Case” and the outcomes of the WWEST study on the WinSETT Centre “Becoming Leaders” workshops in BC.

WWEST at E-Fest 2012

Together with DAWEG (Division for the Advancement of Women in Engineering and Geoscience), WWEST hosted an information booth at the annual Vancouver E-Fest held on March 3rd 2012 at the Vancouver Public Library . The booth featured information on the different WWEST and DAWEG initiatives and how to get involved!

CCWESTT Presentation: “Advancing Women’s Leadership in SET”

Presenting at this national conference in Halifax, Dr. Croft and WWEST Manager Jennifer Pelletier presented on methods of increasing women’s leadership in SET.

Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Networking Night

At this networking evening, Dr. Croft acted as a mentor for female science and engineering undergraduate students.

Robotics Lab Tour 

On February 7, 57 Students from York House School participated in a tour of the CARIS (Center for Advanced Robotics and Intelligent Systems) Laboratory, led by Dr. Elizabeth Croft and her graduate students. Students were divided into small groups (6-7) and had the opportunity to interact with 3 different robotic systems including the robotic balance platform, Charlie the PR2, and Betty our collaborative lifting robot.

UBC Engineering Open House

WWEST was present at the UBC Engineering Open House on Saturday, November 26th, 2011.  The UBC Engineering Open House is a great opportunity to learn more about engineering, to see some of the fantastic research the university is doing, and to meet us!

The Imposter Phenomenon Panel Discussion

Partnering with UBC APSC Alumni Affairs, WWEST hosted this special event that preceded the official launch of the NSERC Chair.

Panelists included Ms. Isabelle Blain, Vice President, Research Grants and Scholarships, of NSERC; Ms. Jennifer Defreyne, Director of CSEL Operations for Teck Resources Limited; Dr. Simon Peacock, Dean of the Faculty of Science at the University of British Columbia; and Ms. Catherine Roome, COO of the BC Safety Authority.
